How Comfrey makes sunscreen self-explanatory
2019 – The Problem
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the Netherlands, while in summer sunscreen is often nowhere to be seen at sports clubs, on terraces and even on the beach. The idea of Smeerkees arises: we want to make sunscreen accessible in places where people forget about it!
2020 – First pole
Our founder Philip wins a scholarship (still with his sister at the time) after pitching the concept during his studies. We can develop! From then on, things move fast: the first prototype is built, teething problems are ironed out, and testing is in full swing.
2021 – First partners
We are in the process of raising awareness of the problem and presenting our solution. After many conversations, there are our first customers: HC Breda places a sunscreen pole at the sports club and the Zilveren Kruis starts a national campaign with us. Fantastic! Nice detail: both partners, five summers later, are still using our sunscreen poles. Something we are enormously proud of.
2022 – Growth
The sunscreen pole phenomenon is completely new, but it is becoming increasingly well known. Small pilots with brands are growing into national campaigns, and more and more municipalities are choosing to deploy sunscreen poles to create awareness around a sun-safe environment for their residents. We continue to grow!
2026 – Today
We now place hundreds of sunscreen poles throughout the Benelux every year and make sunscreen accessible to millions of people. For municipalities a super tangible way to protect residents, for brands a unique social campaign. Great to see and many more to come!
