Sunscreen for clients food bank
Two hundred households in Lelystad who rely on the food bank for food aid will also receive a tube of sunscreen with their groceries this week. The action is part of KWF’s sun protection project, designed to prevent skin cancer.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the Netherlands. Every year 77,000 people are diagnosed with it. The main cause is UV radiation from the sun. To make people aware of this, KWF is funding 10 GGD projects nationwide to better protect residents from skin cancer, among other things.
The GGD Flevoland is financially supported by KWF for elaboration of the project ‘Cancer locally on the map’(for more information see the project website). In this context, a special budget has been made available to improve sun protection in this region. There is specific attention for target groups and for locations where this is most needed.
Distributing tubes of sun block to clients of the food bank is part of this. In collaboration with Smeerkees Zonnebrandcrème and with the support of Lelystad municipality, GGD Flevoland has developed and distributed the following products: 500 tubes of sun block (SPF30) of 50 ml and 325 tubes of sun block (SPF30) of 250 ml. These tubes bear the logo of the Lelystad municipality and the campaign message ‘ZonVeilig Flevoland’.
SunSafe Flevoland
‘ZonVeilig Flevoland’ draws attention to skin cancer. With a subsidy from KWF, GGD Flevoland supports municipalities in providing sun protection materials such as sunscreen dispensers and posts during the summer months. There are also activities aimed at raising awareness among residents through schools, sports, events, youth health care and this week in Lelystad very specifically at the food bank.
